Oliver!

Consider yourself at home—Oliver! is now open at the Gielgud Theatre.
The musical, based on Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, follows orphan Oliver, who is cast out of the only home he’s ever known after uttering the iconic line every musical fan knows: “Please, sir, I want some more.” The story tracks hopeful Oliver navigating London in search of his fortune, encountering the cunning Fagin, the notorious Bill Sykes, and his kind-hearted wife, Nancy. But will she guide Oliver toward a better chance at life, away from corruption?
From the moment the first notes of “Food, Glorious Food” begin, the show bursts into a lively and energetic spectacle. A combination of stunning lighting design and dynamic staging seamlessly transports the audience through misty, dreary London locales, while the cast’s talent pulls you into a heartfelt story featuring some colorful characters.
Shanay Holmes as Nancy is a powerhouse of raw emotion and exceptional vocals, bringing depth and passion to the role of a woman torn between loyalty to her lover and compassion for poor Oliver. Simon Lipkin shines as the charismatic, morally ambiguous Fagin, delivering light-hearted moments, clever fourth-wall-breaking jokes, and a modernized portrayal that brought a breath of fresh air. The ensemble of children—and, of course, Oliver (played by Raphael Korniets on this night)—is a testament to the incredible talent young performers bring to the stage.
For those familiar with the show, this new Cameron Mackintosh production may feel like a nostalgic warm hug. However, as a first-time viewer, I found the story somewhat dated—perhaps due to a cultural disconnect and not having grown up with it as many others have. While I didn’t feel deeply connected to the story, the high quality of every aspect of the production—from the performances to the technical design—makes it a show worth adding to your watchlist. One thing is certain: for Oliver! fans, this is Oliver! at its very best, and you’re sure to be in for a delightful treat with this quintessential British musical that has returned to the West End.
