One Man Musical
Review by Sam
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Transferring directly from its critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe run, comedians Flo & Joan bring their brand new musical about one famous man to the Soho Theatre.
Best known for their hilarious musical comedy (which I highly recommend), Flo & Joan have utilised their incredible talents to flip what they do on its head and create their very own comedy musical. They have crafted an extremely detailed character study of a very famous individual which is both highly informed and deeply funny. Without spoiling precisely who the man is, rest assured that if you are a fan of musical theatre then you will be highly entertained over the course of this 75 minute rollercoaster of a production. The show is bursting at the seams with theatrical references and jabs at the industry as a whole, in a musical which easily takes the crown as the most original theatre I’ve seen all year.
Flo & Joan feature on stage for the duration of the show as the ‘Orchestra’, with many jokes made about their roles in the production, but it is George Fouracres who is brave enough to lead the piece with a performance that is a wonder to behold and nothing short of theatrical perfection. He has a clear love for the material and being a part of the production, throwing himself into every element of the script with full commitment. His vocals are impressive and his performance made me laugh so frequently that my face hurt, but it was his improvisation that was my personal stand out Fouracres had the audience in the palm of his hand for the entire duration and whilst remaining in character was able to make quite literally anything funny… Almost as if…. any joke will do!
Flo & Joan have written a highly original show that is both an ode to musical theatre and a comical meta-commentary on the culture surrounding it. It’s bursting with comedy from every avenue and is only made stronger from its sensational lead performance. Bigger things are on the horizon for this jaw-achingly funny piece of theatre that simply must be seen by more people before a certain someone’s lawyers get involved!
