[Title Of Show]

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell’s one-act, self-inspired, meta-musical returns to London after a successful run at the Phoenix Arts Club earlier this year.

Hunter and Jeff are two struggling musical writers who have a big theatre festival deadline fast approaching. As they struggle to think of ideas, Jeff suggests they should write about what to write about, thus beginning a packed 90 minute meta-production in which the characters both write and perform said show along with two actress friends. The production proudly boasts self expression through its detailing of the creative process, inviting a look into both the real and semi-fictionalised worlds of these characters.

The entire company are extremely strong, performing pitch perfect vocal harmonies through beautifully realised characterisations. All four members of the primary cast have electric chemistry together and instantly sell this story with talented performances. However it was musical director Tom Chippendale who stole the show, with his hilarious interjection’s into the narrative. His character of Larry is carefully woven into the story, constantly injecting freshness into the production whenever his role is utilised. Despite performances showcasing vocal prowess and fun incorporation of the musical director, the show itself sadly lacks some of the pizazz it strives for.

Whilst the show may have been a tony nominee in the US, the text feels too American-skewing for a British crowd. Large amount of jokes either went over my head or did not land in the intended way. The plot itself also felt as though it reached a natural conclusion after 45 minutes, leaving the remainder of the runtime to feel drawn out with padded dialogue and fairly forgettable songs.

With another meta-musical (which feels more up-to-date) running in London today, this production sadly falls slightly by the wayside. There are some good jokes and moments to love, but dated references and a script which ultimately looses sight of its aim left me feeling a little unsatisfied with this [show].
