Man in the Mirror

Review by Jude

⭐⭐⭐⭐

The production felt like an intimate Michael Jackson concert, with impressive attention to detail and deep respect for his genius work. The audience spanned generations, from enthusiastic seven-year-olds to lifelong fans in their seventies—a testament to Michael Jackson’s enduring legacy and timeless appeal.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and CJ’s portrayal of Michael Jackson was wonderful. Though the voice had its own unique touch, it took some time to be fully sold on it. However, CJ’s infectious energy quickly made the performance feel authentic and captivating. Capturing the essence of the King of Pop requires exceptional skill in singing, dancing, and acting—and CJ proved himself a triple threat, complemented by a vibrant band and dynamic backup dancers.

While it’s impossible to tell Michael’s story without acknowledging the group that launched his career, the decision to have four white backup dancers wearing afros felt questionable. While it may have been intended as a nod to the era and the Jackson brothers, it prompts reflection on whether a more appropriate approach should have been considered.

As an advocate for etiquette, shows blending concert elements with storytelling often take a moment for audiences to settle in. Initially, there was uncertainty about whether it was appropriate to film, clap, sing, or dance along. However, with cues from seasoned attendees and encouragement from the cast, it quickly became clear that participation was encouraged. Some of the most delightful moments came from watching fans in the aisles showcase their own MJ-inspired dance moves—complete with choreography and costumes!

The evening ended on a heartfelt note, with CJ sharing his hope that the audience would carry forward Michael Jackson’s deeper message: to heal the world and treat each human being with kindness. It was a touching conclusion that resonated deeply. As one young audience member excitedly exclaimed during a brief pause between songs, “That was amazing!”—a sentiment that clearly echoed throughout the room.
