Much Ado About Nothing

In a pink flurry of confetti, Shakespeare returns in glory to Drury Lane.
Jamie Lloyd's contemporary approach to Much Ado About Nothing is fresh, vibrant and thoroughly joyous.
From the moment the curtain opens there is music, laughter and lots of pink confetti falling from the sky, none of which falters throughout the performance. It maintains a high energy, free spirited and unique take on a classic comedy.
In typical Jamie Lloyd fashion the stage is stripped bare with the back walls of this iconic theatre on display with no set to block any view and minimal costume changes only used when done to delightful effect. Particularly this take on a masquerade party is one of my favourites.
Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell are marvelous and deserve great recognition for their delivery of the original text. Specifically as this rendition breaks the fourth wall, is tongue in cheek and drew the full house to understand the jokes. There is nothing low-key about Hiddleston's comedic timing and his charm is flawless as he delivers the performance of the year. Similarly, Atwell captains the stage with impeccable power and is a perfect Beatrice.
The super pair are joined by an impressive ensemble all of whom are worthy of recognition. In particular is Mason Alexander Park who becomes a staple figure singing throughout the show like a narrator Lady Gaga. The vocals are powerful and provide the backing of some iconic dance scenes.
The highlights of this show come when it doesn't take itself too seriously and allows the joy of the text and the actors to barrel roll around in the confetti and laugh at themselves. It is a complete refresh for those familiar with Jamie Lloyd and showcases a versatility that many may have forgotten.
John Gielgud famously broke Prospero's staff proclaiming Shakespeare would be lost to musicals at the Theatre Royal and it is safe to say he was wrong. Much Ado About Nothing is a joyous experience making Shakespeare accessible to anyone. Audiences will love this show and people will talk about seeing this for years and years.
